Myanmar Junta Eliminates Opposition

The Myanmar junta has succeeded in eliminating all rivals to their own power that the IHT now reports that there's no one left to challenge the junta. Go figure.

This should surprise no one. The junta violently put down the last attempt to demonstrate more than a decade ago. They did so again in the past week. Thousands dead and missing attest to the brutality and the tight grip that the junta seeks to maintain.

It's what totalitarian regimes do.

The junta did this even as diplomats called for more talks and for China to take a harder line with the junta. Calling for an arms embargo does nothing to alter the situation on the ground. The junta controls more weapons than any of their opposition. They have a monopoly on force and an embargo will not change that fact.

So, what everyone is left with is the ability to angrily denounce events without having to take a stand.

Nice.
