A judge sentenced Paris Hilton to 45 days in county jail Friday for violating her probation, putting the brakes on the hotel heiress’ famous high life.I doubt the jail time will change her outlook on life one bit. She'll probably turn the experience into a subplot of a movie or television deal.
Hilton, who parlayed her name and relentless partying into worldwide notoriety, must go to jail on June 5 and she will not be allowed any work release, furloughs, use of an alternative jail or electronic monitoring in lieu of jail, Superior Court Judge Michael T. Sauer ruled after a hearing.
The judge ruled that she was in violation of the terms of her probation in an alcohol-related reckless driving case.
Her mother and lawyer were indignant over the judge's ruling. What did you actually expect? Not only did Hilton stroll into her court appearance late, but her testimony was not believable and no amount of excuses could hide the fact that she violated the terms of her probation.
Where there may be a point is that the judge was singling out Hilton to make an example of her because of her fame and fortune. That's an argument that often crops up in criminal cases involving famous people, but it tends to cut both ways. Sometimes you get the feeling that they're given lighter sentences because of their fame, while others are hit hard. My sense is that this was the appropriate ruling.
