I've already given my review of the movie, but it doesn't matter what I or the critics think, because Spiderman 3 is going to break records. It's already set a one day record of $59 million domestically, topping the prior record set by Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest, which itself was panned by critics and yet took in more than $800 million worldwide. I figure the movie will break $110 million for the weekend.
Some movies become a phenomenon all to themselves. The Spiderman franchise is one. Pirates is another. Rotten Tomatoes has a roundup of reaction, and it is decidedly mixed.
Yet, people will go in droves to see the movie - just to say they've seen it. The question is whether there will be enough repeat business to drive the box office past next week, when the next blockbuster is set to run - Shrek comes out May 18 and then Pirates comes out May 25.
