La Conciergerie. This striking architecture is in stark contrast to the purpose for which the building was used. It was where the condemned spent their last hours alive before being sent to the guillotine. It was used to house high value prisoners including "...Marie Antoinette, the poet André Chénier, Charlotte Corday, Madame Élisabeth, Madame du Barry and the Girondins, who were condemned by Georges Danton, who was in turn condemned by Robespierre, who was himself condemned and executed in a final bout of bloodletting."

Lots of history here, and it is one of the more spectacular pieces of architecture in a city full of spectacular architecture.
