A U.S. congresswoman called on the Bush administration Wednesday to reconsider its ban on selling parts for U.S.-made F-16 fighter jets to Venezuela, urging improved ties between the two nations. That Congresswoman is Sheila Jackon Lee (D-TX 18), who believes that the US should be giving advanced weapons and support to Venezuela, despite the mounting evidence showing that [T]hugo is quickly becoming a dictator with total power and who has turned the US into a bogeyman to further his personal interests in absolute power.
He has nationalized industries, caused food shortages, and has threatened the US repeatedly - not to mention mocked the President during the UN General Assembly opening session last year.
Set aside all that, and note that Venezuela is quite cozy with Iran's Ahmadinejad and Castro in Cuba and there is absolutely no reason to consider supplying Venezuela with weapons of any sort. As it is, Venezuela is getting arms from Russia and is angling for a larger role in spreading his socialist vision through Latin America.
So, why is Lee considering such a move? Could it be as simple as that the company producing the F-16 is based in Texas? All politics is local after all.
Yet, there is good reason to believe that Lee is suffering from amnesia or other medical ailments since she ignores what [T]hugo has said and done and instead believes that Venezuela is a friendly nation. Sorry, but empowering a dictator is not in the interests of the US.
