Chutzpah at the New York Times

Yesterday, the Washington Post issued and then substantially retracted its story about the Inspector General's report on the Office of Special Plans and its investigation of potential al Qaeda links with Iraq. The report found no illegalities or other irregularities. However, the WaPo conflated the report with a critique by Sen. Carl Levin, so as to attribute the word inappropriate with the IG's report.

I said last night that the initial WaPo report would be picked up by others and repeated as fact.

Well, I give you the NYT, which repeats the WaPo erroneous story as fact even as the WaPo issued a correction that essentially repeals the original story and focus.

There was nothing inappropriate about Feith's actions or that of the DoD. The WaPo admits as much. That's simply the opinion of the detestable Carl Levin, who's been itching to investigate the Administration from day 1. It remains to be seen whether the Times will issue a correction or retract the story as well.

I don't put much faith in either happening.

UPDATE:
Postwatch calls this the mother of all WaPo corrections. It sure is a doozy.
