Go forth and hear Reuters CEO Tom Glocer address the issue of fake and staged photos and the astonishing admission: they're everywhere, not just at Reuters. Reuters is also planning on implementing software systems to determine whether photos have been photo edited or retouched. Well, seems that they'd already had that capability, but hadn't used it.
Confederate Yankee thinks it's a gutsy move to admit to this. I'm not so sure. It's an admission that they are not going to be able to stop the fakery and it's an attempt to try and diffuse the reaction to when they're discovered.
