Remembering the Sbarro Atrocity

As Little Green Footballs reminds us, today is the 5th anniversary of the Sbarro atrocity in Jerusalem. Lest we forget what this current war is really about, anniversary like this must be remembered. We must never forget that the underlying cause of this war is the fact that the palestinians, and indeed, the Arab world, will not acknowledge Israel's fundamental right to exist. Hamas, Hezbollah, have at the core of their charter, the destruction of Israel. Syria, Iran, and most of the Middle East, deny the holocaust, and preach the destruction of Israel as party mantra. Israel faces enemies at all of its borders who wish at one time or another, have launched offensives against it. Israel faces a continued and persistent fight for its very survival. Moreover, it does this while being subjected to a level of moral standard that no country could live up, and that no country has been held to.

The Sbarro attack, and the all to many other attacks just like it, must be remembered, taught, revisited, and recounted. The world needs to remember what Israel faces on a daily basis. The world needs to remember the horrors that the palestinian terrorists are capable of carrying out, and more than willing to do time and time again.

Last year I read the book, Right to Exist: A Moral Defense of Israel's Wars, by Yaacov Lozowick. Mr. Lozowick is (was?) the director of the archives at Yad Vashem, Israel's Holocaust museum, and was prompted to write this book after his friend's daughter was killed at Sbarros. Anyone who feels that Israel has gone to far, or that Israel is the aggressor in this conflict, or who feels that Israel has illtreated the palestinians, please, read this book. If you still believe that way after reading it, ok, your entitled to your opinions. But if you read it with an open mind, I am positive that you will see the current conflict in its historic significance, and realize who is truly right, and who is truly wrong.
