Yo Ho Ho and a Boatload of Cash

I saw the new Pirates of the Caribbean movie last nite, and let's just say that it was exactly what the summer movie season ordered. Don't worry, there's no spoilers here, so bear with me. It's a box office smash hit that breaks the single day box office take. $55 million in just the first day. That's a whole lot of popcorn.

Pirates is a popcorn flick that mixes humor, action, and eye candy (for both guys - Keira Knightley, and gals - Johnny Depp and Orlando Bloom). What do you expect from a Jerry Bruckheimer production?

The story is not bad, but it's almost besides the point. It's all about the action sequences, and those are masterfully done. Gore Verbinski knows how to shoot with CGI, unlike another certain person whose CGI studios help make this movie possible (here's a hint, his first name is George). This movie doesn't feel like a 2.5 hour long movie, but that's what it clocks in at.

The bad guys are bad alright - and the CGI creations are wonderous and serious eye candy. There are some sequences that might be scary for kids under 13, which is to be expected considering the subject material.

So, my advice is to check it out, then wait for the sequel next year. Or go to Disney and ride the revamped Pirates attraction.
