Human Rights Hypocrisy

Eritrea slams the US Human Rights Report that was released this past week. They claim that the US has no moral standing to rank anyone else because of - get this - reports of abuse at GitMo and Abu Ghraib.

Maybe Eritrea should have checked more closely - the reports of abuse at GitMo were exaggerated and many of the soldiers involved in the Abu Ghraib scandal were prosecuted. Several were imprisoned. The commanding general of the prison had her rank reduced.

The difference between the actions of the US and those of the countries that are among the worst offenders of human rights is that the abuses done by the US are outside the moral, ethical, and legal codes. The individuals are not sanctioned by the US government.

In countries like China, Eritrea, Sudan, Iran, Saudi Arabia, these behaviors are routinely condoned, encouraged, and demanded by the totalitarian regimes themselves.
