Meet the newest members of the Palestinian government: a terrorist who tried to poison Jerusalem's water supply, a murderer serving life in prison and the war-mongering mother of three suicide killers. Not that this should be any surprise to my readers. The fact is that the Palestinian Authority has always been stocked with terrorists and those seeking mass murder of Israelis - starting with Yasir Arafat himself. And those 'governments' included terrorists who were sitting in Israeli jails for inciting of perpetrating terrorist activities themselves.
Palestine's new Hamas-led rulers — who include a dozen parliamentarians currently jailed for violence against Israel — reject peaceful negotiation as a way to achieve a Palestinian state.
"Jihad comes ahead of everything, including my feelings as a mother," said Mariam Farhat, 56, a new member of parliament from Gaza — and the mother of three sons who died on suicide missions against Israel.
Farhat, a gray-robed mother of 10, sent her 18-year old son to shoot up a settlement in the West Bank four years ago. The boy murdered five Israeli teens before he was killed. Farhat has boasted on TV that three of her six sons have died "martyrs."
Another incoming legislator, Mouhamad A-Tir, was once jailed for trying to poison Jerusalem's water supply. And Ahmed Sadat is still serving time for organizing the assassination of an Israeli Cabinet minister in 2001. Hamas wrested control of the Palestinian parliament last month by winning 74 of its seats, crushing the Fatah party, which had ruled Palestinians for four decades.
The key difference is that Arafat was a master at hiding his true intentions from most Westerners, while Hamas has no reason to do so. Hamas wants to destroy Israel, and on that it cannot negotiate, waiver, or alter its fundamental nature. This isn't just about electing a group that may be less corrupt than Fatah. It's about the Palestinian people choosing between bad and worse. They never sought to cultivate a third way. A political movement that sought peace with Israel along the lines of a two-state solution.
Meanwhile, Israel is set to cut off funding to the Palestinian Authority with Hamas taking over. The Israeli cabinet voted to cut off the funding and Hamas says the decision wont frighten the Palestinian people. Of course not. They'll do what they've always done when they don't get their way. They riot. They'll try to kill Israelis, and Hamas will cheerlead all the while.
And Israel isn't taking its security situation lying down either. It's continuing its targeted approach to taking out terrorists before they can strike. An airstrike in Gaza killed two terrorists and two other terrorists were killed while trying to plant a bomb near a security fence. And despite the media claims that Hamas may open up new opportunities for peace, the level of violence has remained unchanged - the Palestinians have continued their attacks on Israel without regard for who is in charge:
"Intensive IDF operations conducted in recent weeks to nab fugitives in northern Samaria have weakened existing terror infrastructures and have forced terrorists to transfer their activities to the Nablus area where they are planning attacks in Israel," an IDF officer told The Jerusalem Post.
Four explosive belts caught by soldiers manning the Awarta checkpoint outside of Nablus in recent weeks, were part of those attempts, the officer said.
On entering the camp, troops encountered fierce resistance, bombs were detonated near soldiers, and exchanges of gunfire erupted between Palestinian gunmen and troops.
In addition soldiers also had to contend with mobs throwing stones and firebombs at them. During the day, security forces arrested one Fatah fugitive in the camp and an IDF bulldozer demolished a home where soldiers believed fugitives were hiding.
