Go figure. The Muslim leaders in France are deflecting attention away from the acts of their followers. This, despite the fact that there were definite militant Islamist overtones to the rioting, especially as it progressed to its peak levels. Churches were particularly singled out by rioters.
That would be an odd choice for rioters who aren't religiously motivated, but makes sense when you consider that the rioters were largely Muslim.
UPDATE:
I've been noticing that the French have called the rioting over since they declared that the car torch metric has returned to normal. Well, a new normal perhaps. At the outset, Sarkozy and others claimed that cars were torched on average of 20-40 a night, which is not altogether different than the rate of torchings in the US. At the high end, it does exceed the rate in the US by a significant margin. Now, we're talking about a normal rate of 100.
What does this mean. Have the French redefined the normal, or are they stating that the rates were far higher than previously admitted? Unless someone in the media asks the question, there's no way to know. And one can't quite count on the French media to do that either considering that they've undertaken a collusion campaign to underreport the rioting.
