The New York Times gets around to discussing an evacuation of New York City and what that would entail. As I noted last week, the New York Post ran the same kind of story, and the paper determined that there are serious issues with the evacuation plan.
Trying to evacuate a city of 8 million people, or getting more than 20 million people out of harms way in the metropolitan area has never been done before in world history, let alone under emergency conditions. The evacuation will depend greatly on how strong the storm will be, the storm track, and the expected storm surge.
Alexander the Average, an emergency planner from Texas, would be a good place to catch discussions on what is involved in disaster planning and evacuation of large numbers of people.
