The problem is that the network news doesn't find this particular story interesting. More than 83 people are murdered for doing nothing more than being on vacation in what is considered a very nice destination on the Red Sea in Egypt. Ho hum. Nothing to see here.
The victims are very likely to be predominantly Muslim and Egyptian, although there are probably a sprinkling of foreigners.
In a statement posted on an Islamic website, a group calling itself the Abdullah Azzam Brigades, al-Qaeda, in Syria and Egypt, said it carried out the bombings, the Associated Press news agency reported, although the claim has not been verified. So, let's get this straight. Sharm al Sheik is on the Sinai Peninsula, which was returned to Egypt by Israel as a result of the Camp David Accords of 1979. Why would al Qaeda attack Egypt? Think about it for a moment.
Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak has cut short his vacation to visit the scene of the attacks, which happened on a national holiday marking the 1952 Egyptian Revolution.
Al Qaeda claims responsibility for the bombing, new reports suggest that more than 60 murdered were Egyptian. More than 200 were injured. The blast was so powerful that it shook buildings more than six miles away. Who was the intended victims here? Israelis? Egyptians? Tourists? Soldiers?
It was the systematic and deliberate targeting of civilians on vacation in a country whose population is overwhelmingly Muslim. The message is muddled, but would suggest that either Egypt toes the fundamentalist Islamic message, or else it will be subjected to further attacks. This is a death cult we're dealing with, and that's the only possible message one can discern unless you subscribe to the notion that al Qaeda seeks to kill for the pure pleasure of mass murder.
