I think Michelle Malkin has it wrong. She uses the adjective 'zealot' to describe the nutbars who call themselves the Animal Liberation Front. I'd call them terrorists.
They engage in behaviors that cause terror, destroy property and can endanger people. They use bombs, chemcials, and incendiaries to achieve their aims.
To classify them as anything other than terrorists is missing the point.
