Wanting For Leadership

The NY Sun writes that they're waiting for leadership to get the WTC rebuilding underway.

I disagree.

We are wanting for leadership out of someone, anyone really, to take the necessary steps to get the WTC rebuilt. Most people don't particularly care about the final form of what is built, just as long as something is built.

People only came to love the WTC after it was gone. People grew to love the Vietnam Veterans Memorial after it was built, yet it was derided when it was chosen out of hundreds of possible plans. While there seems to be a growing desire to see the Twin Towers rebuilt, that is in part out of anger and frustration with the fact that nothing has been done to date to see the skyline made whole.

The Freedom Tower may have had some interesting symbology involved (1776 feet) and a resemblance to the Statue of Liberty's torch held high, but this goes beyond symbology. The building has to make economic sense down the road, and in its current form, it does not. The master plan needs to make sense, economically, politically, emotionally, and culturally. It does not. It tries to do too many things in too small a space, and that can only be solved by going big.

Going big means Twin Towers. Again.

No one suggests that both towers be rebuilt at the same time, although that would be a preferred solution because it would minimize the time Downtown is disrupted by construction - and speeds the healing process (although that too is an overused phrase). Yet, not a single piece of structrual steel has been ordered or delivered to begin the process.

It will take more than waiting to see leadership. Leadership takes more than naming new czars to oversee the process. It takes demanding action.

And it's the actions that have been lacking by all the politicals involved.
