Sen. Charles Schumer clearly wants something built at the WTC, and takes aim at Gov. Pataki and Mayor Bloomberg for their dawdling on the matter. Further delays could endanger more than $2 billion in federal aid earmarked for rebuilding. If you don't use the money, you lose it.
New York stands to lose that $2 billion it can ill afford to lose.
The Mayor and Governor must act decisively to get something built at the site. If it means scrapping the Libeskind plan and going in a different direction, fine. If it means using eminient domain to buy out Silverstein Properties leasehold interest on the WTC, fine. Whatever should be done to move the project along, must be done.
The rebuilding of Lower Manhattan is at stake, and no one appears to care. One would think that in an election year, the Mayor and Governor who are both up for reelection would do everything within their power to get the projects moving. Yet, they both have done expended nearly enough energy to make it happen.
That prompts questions over what their intentions are - whether it is to scuttle the Libeskind plan in favor of something else, a loss of interest in the WTC rebuilding, or some other reason.
Lower Manhattan needs to have a resolution to this matter. The City deserves better.
