Waterfall in Golan Heights, taken July 1993.

One of the big misconceptions about the Middle East is that it is entirely desert or very arid. Well, not all areas are arid, and the Golan Heights is strategic not only for its position on the Israel/Syria/Lebanon border, but because it dominates water supplies for the region. That said, water may the the source of the next major conflict in the region, not oil. That's what I wrote back in 1996, and I still think that is an accurate assessment.
